Course Overview 
During this 2-day workshop, you’ll create a contemporary version of the traditional Irish skib, originally used for straining and serving potatoes. Today, these versatile baskets make beautiful bread baskets or wall hangings.
 
Working in a small, relaxed group, you’ll learn and practise key willow weaving skills as you build your skib. Beginners and those newer to basketry are encouraged to make one small skib, while those with more experience may have time to make a larger version.
 
Sarah will guide you through each stage, adapting her teaching to suit your experience and helping you develop your confidence with willow. After two days, you’ll have your own unique skib to take home and enjoy.
 
Course Details
 
Day one
You’ll begin by learning how willow is prepared, then how to select, sort and grade the material ready for weaving – an important skill for creating a balanced basket. You’ll then put these skills into practice as you make the base of your skib, developing your technique as the day progresses.
 
Day Two
We will begin the day by preparing and inserting the uprights, before going onto weaving the sides and then weaving the border. 
 
Experience: Beginners and improvers
This course is suitable for all abilities, although some experience weaving with willow previously is helpful. Techniques will be adjusted to suit the experience of each individual. 
 
Participants must be 18 years old and over.
 
 
What you need to bring
Please bring a packed lunch. Please wear warm clothes you don't mind getting messy, and bring extra layers (we will be working in a large open space).

Materials and use of tools. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available throughout the day.
 
Cancellation
Within 14 days of booking: a full refund.
 
After 14 days of placing a booking: a refund will only be issued if we can rebook your place, in which case you’ll receive a full refund (minus a £20 administration fee).
 
Bookings cannot be transferred. We will make reasonable efforts to rebook cancelled places but cannot guarantee this.
Accessibility:
Willow weaving is physically active in all areas. It can particularly hard on the hands, so is unsuitable for those who suffer from arthritis or other conditions that affect the hands. Courses will involve working at many levels, including bending down to the floor, working on laps or standing, and working seated at tables. If you have any physical difficulties in any of these areas, we advise you to contact us before booking.
